Since I am about to begin my master's degree program soon, I am dedicating this gratitude journal entry to WGU. WGU stands for Western Governors University. It is a private university that is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. WGU is "an online university that won't rest until you succeed." WGU is allowed to provide prospective students an affordable tuition rate because it does not have to maintain a physical campus. Tuition is charged at a flat rate each term and each term is 6 months long. For example, my degree program is 18 month long which is 3-4 terms in total. I have the option of shortening my degree program. It is really up to me. I begin my master's degree program in August 2020 and should finish by July 2022. WGU charges a flat rate fee for learning resources that will be used in the courses that are a part of your degree program. These learning resources include: e-textbooks, library services (which are available through your student portal), web-based tutorials, simulations, online classes, and learning communities. These resources are available to students directly or through WGU’s affiliations with third-party education providers. These resources are available to students directly or through WGU’s affiliations with third-party education providers. WGU has many benefits, but the most important benefit, in my opinion, of WGU is that it allows student's to balance school and life responsibilities. I am so grateful I found WGU so I can earn a master's degree. I actually have plans to become a civil rights attorney, so earning this master's degree will make my dream of being that a reality soon. I spoke on the phone with an enrollment counselor from a different nonprofit university (SNHU) who was very helpful and she recommended that I should look further into other nonprofit online universities that are located in California. I was very interested to use the my recovery time to further my education. I ended up researching and looking into accredited nonprofit universities that have online degree programs available. Using this website with a search tool that filters online universities by what degree you want to pursue and which specific subject area you are interested in (I have provided a link below). Using this search tool I came across WGU and ended up researching further into the university. I instantly fell in love with it". I saw WGU is not located in California, but it still provides degrees to California residents. You may be wondering "cool story on WGU, but why are you so grateful for this university's existence?" Well I can gladly provide answers to that question. I am grateful for WGU's existence because the classes that WGU provides revolve around a "competency-educated approach". This approach is defined as "earning your degree by demonstrating your skills, knowledge, and understanding of important concepts". Basically you will prosper and earn your degree by using things you already know along with concepts that have been already taught to you instead of only concepts being taught to you. WGU allows students to use previous knowledge. Other reasons I am grateful for WGU's existence are that WGU provides flexible, online bachelor's or master's degree programs under three different subject areas, an affordable tuition rate, transfer credits are taken, and the last and most important reason why for me why WGU is great is that I had an amazing and very helpful enrollment counselor that actually referred me to the master's degree program I am enrolled in. The reasons I have provided above explain why WGU is great, so thank you for reading!
